The earthquake of May 27, 2006, has left
nearly 6,000 dead, seriously injured thousands more, and destroyed
thousands of houses. Nurani Dunia Foundation is engaged in the
following emergency relief efforts:
- Emergency medical services. A team of 30+ doctors, comprised
of advanced medical students and physicians, is
engaged in outreach to villages that have not yet received
help. In the 10 days following the quake, they
acquired 2,300 patients in their outreach practice and
they are working as well to transfer serious cases out
to hospitals. Nurani Dunia is also coordinating with other
groups of doctors to channel medical aid and
food aid, as there are concerns about lack of food in some
areas. Nutritional support includes milk, energy biscuits,
etc. Warehouse storage is provided by GE and
the Agricultural College in Yogyakarta (Sekolah Tinggi
Penyuluhan Pertanian). The emergency post in Bantul is
located at Jalan Parangtritis Km. 7,5, Kecamatan Sewon,
Kabupaten Bantul, Yogyakarta. The post is located at a
building owned by the Department of Agriculture.
- Emergency shelter. Nurani Dunia is helping to
provide tents shelter in the form of plastic-coated
tarps. There is need for shelter, especially for members
of vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, pregnant
women, and those in poor health. Nurani Dunia is presently
planning to build sturdier shelter for vulnerable groups
using steel frames, locally available bamboo, and other
materials. It is estimated that people might be living
in very temporary shelter (tents, or under tarps) for
the next 6-7 months. Nurani Dunia is mobilizing local construction
support for the building of of more permanent shelter.
Nurani Dunia is also building public toilets for use
by those living in temporary shelter situations.
- Public kitchens and support for clearing debris.
In communities where houses have been destroyed
in clusters, public kitchens are being established
to feed those who are at work clearing debris
left by the quake. The people are engaged in gotong
royong (mutual assistance) without pay, so public kitchens
ensure that everyone is fed in the process. Supplies
needed include kitchen equipment, as well as shovels,
boots, and other tools for clearing debris.
Food aid is also needed to support the kitchens.
